Rosy Ermine Moth: The Rainforest’s Fuzzy Jewel

The rosy ermine moth (Trosia nigropunctigera), also known as the rosy flannel moth, is a striking resident of the lush rainforests and cloudforests of Central and South America. This vibrant moth boasts delicate forewings in a pale straw or white, adorned with a perfect row of black dots, while its thorax is highlighted with flashy red spots. Its head, abdomen, and legs are fiery red, making it look like it’s dressed for a rainforest gala!

First described by entomologist David Stephen Fletcher in 1982, the species has a wingspan of 45–60 millimeters—a petite size for such an artful design. Found in tropical habitats across countries like Costa Rica, Panama, and Peru, these moths thrive at altitudes of 400 to 1,200 meters (1,300 to 3,900 feet).
