Animal Facts:
The mandarinfish (Synchiropus splendidus), also known as the mandarin dragonet, is one of the most colorful fish in the ocean, resembling a living piece of art! Found in the Pacific, from the Ryukyu Islands to Australia, this small reef-dweller is famous for its vibrant blue, orange, and green patterns, which look like they’ve been painted on.
Interestingly, mandarinfish are one of the only vertebrates that get their blue color from pigment-containing cells called cyanophores, rather than structural coloration. Their large, fan-like fins are not just for swimming—they’re used for "walking" along the seafloor, making them even more unique.
These little beauties grow to only about 6 cm (2.4 inches) and are popular in the saltwater aquarium trade. However, they’re tricky to care for because of their picky diet of tiny crustaceans and invertebrates, like copepods. To top it all off, mandarinfish have no scales, but instead secrete a slimy, smelly mucus that helps protect them from disease and predators. Nature’s way of saying, “I’m gorgeous, but don’t mess with me!”
