Animal Facts:
The Black-collared Starling (Gracupica nigricollis) is a striking bird known for its bold black-and-white plumage and distinctive black "collar" around its neck. Native to southern China and much of mainland Southeast Asia, this bird has successfully adapted to human-altered habitats, including grasslands, dry forests, and even urban settlements. It has also been introduced to places like Taiwan, Malaysia, and Singapore, where it has become a common sight.
With a length of 26–30 cm (10–12 inches), this starling features a glossy white head with a bright yellow eye-patch, dark brown wings, and a white-tipped tail. These birds are highly vocal, with an eclectic range of calls that can surprise onlookers—from shrill and harsh to melodic and almost comical.
Famous for their social behavior, Black-collared Starlings pair up with dramatic courtship displays, including wing drooping, head bowing, and even mutual preening—an adorable act known as "allopreening." These birds are opportunistic feeders, often seen foraging on the ground for insects, worms, and seeds, sometimes around livestock.
Interestingly, while deforestation often threatens native species, it has ironically helped this adaptable bird expand its range. Thanks to its resilience and increasing population, it holds a "Least Concern" conservation status.
In short, the Black-collared Starling is not just a survivor—it's a loud, social, and captivating bird that beautifully bridges the natural and human-made worlds!
