Animal Facts:
The yellow-eyed penguin, also known as hoiho in Māori, is an endangered penguin species endemic to New Zealand. Easily recognized by the pale yellow band encircling its eyes and head, it is one of the rarest penguins in the world and among the longest-living, with some reaching 20 years of age. Unlike most penguins, yellow-eyed penguins are shy nesters, preferring secluded coastal forests and nesting out of sight from one another. Fascinatingly, they are almost silent and communicate primarily through shrill bray-like calls during breeding. These penguins are exceptional divers, plunging up to 240 meters to hunt fish and squid on the seafloor. Featured on New Zealand's $5 note and crowned "Bird of the Year" twice, this penguin holds a special place in both nature and culture.
