Animal Facts:

Willow Ptarmigan: The Arctic Shape-Shifter

The Willow Ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus), also known as the Willow Grouse, is a fascinating bird adapted to life in the Arctic and subarctic regions. These plump, chicken-sized birds are famed for their seasonal camouflage—brown and speckled in summer to blend with tundra shrubs, and snow-white in the winter to vanish into snowy landscapes. They even grow feathered feet in winter, giving them “snowshoe-like” paws to walk on icy ground, a trait that inspired their scientific name, Lagopus, meaning “hare-footed.”

Native to northern Europe, Siberia, Alaska, and Canada, the Willow Ptarmigan is the state bird of Alaska. It thrives in birch forests, heather moors, and windswept tundra, braving extreme cold with its thick plumage and clever trick of burrowing into snow to stay warm.

Unlike most other grouse species, male Willow Ptarmigans are active dads, fiercely protecting their mates and chicks. These little warriors will puff up, dive bomb predators, and even fake injuries to draw threats away from their families. Though their chicks grow quickly, life in the wilderness is no easy task—only about 35% survive their first year.

With its quirky call and year-round charm, this bird is not only an Arctic survivor but also a social media favorite, sometimes nicknamed the "Awebo Bird" for its hilarious vocalizations. Whether you know it for its adaptability or its comic antics, the Willow Ptarmigan is a true tundra icon!
