An albino gorilla is an extremely rare sight in the animal kingdom, characterized by its white fur caused by a genetic condition called albinism. This condition results from a lack of melanin, the pigment responsible for coloration in the skin, hair, and eyes. Albinism also makes animals more sensitive to sunlight and can affect eyesight. To date, Snowflake remains the only albino gorilla ever documented, making him a legend among great apes.
The Story of Snowflake
Born around 1964 in Spanish Guinea, Snowflake was a western lowland gorilla discovered in the wild by a farmer who named him Nfumu Ngui (meaning "white gorilla" in Fang). Later, he was sold to a primatologist and brought to Barcelona Zoo in 1966, where he became an international sensation. His captivating white fur and unique appearance earned him the name "Snowflake" (Floquet de Neu in Catalan).
Snowflake lived a remarkable life, fathering 22 offspring, though none inherited his albinism. He was known for his gentle demeanor but faced challenges due to his condition, including poor eyesight and sensitivity to sunlight. Unfortunately, he developed skin cancer, likely linked to his albinism, and passed away in 2003 at the age of 38-39.
