Stegosaurus: The Armored Showstopper
Stegosaurus is one of the most instantly recognizable dinosaurs, thanks to the dramatic double row of kite-shaped plates running along its back and the fearsome spikes on its tail. Living during the Late Jurassic (about 155–145 million years ago), Stegosaurus roamed ancient North America and parts of Europe—sharing its world with giants like Apatosaurus and predators like Allosaurus.
Despite its size—up to 9 meters (30 feet) long and more than 5 tons—Stegosaurus had a remarkably small head and brain. Its mouth was equipped with a beak and small teeth, perfect for munching on low-growing plants like ferns and cycads.
The exact purpose of Stegosaurus’s plates has long been a mystery. Were they for defense, display, or even controlling body temperature? Scientists believe the tail spikes, called a “thagomizer,” were definitely for defense, as some fossils show damage from dino battles.
With its funky plates, spiky tail, and tiny brain, Stegosaurus remains a prehistoric superstar—capturing imaginations in museums, books, and films the world over!
