Animal Facts:
Pterygotus was a giant sea scorpion from the Silurian to Late Devonian periods (428–372 million years ago), and it was one of the largest arthropods to ever live, reaching lengths of up to 1.75 meters (5.7 feet)! With sharp, robust claws and excellent vision, it was a fearsome predator that likely ruled ancient aquatic ecosystems. Its flattened tail acted as a rudder, helping it steer through prehistoric seas as it hunted trilobites and other prey. Interestingly, Pterygotus was first mistaken for a giant fish when discovered, earning it the name meaning "winged one." This ancient predator was truly a king of the underwater world!
