Pacific Sea Nettle: The Ocean's Golden Drifter

The Pacific Sea Nettle (Chrysaora fuscescens), also called the West Coast sea nettle, is a striking jellyfish native to the northeastern Pacific Ocean, from British Columbia to Mexico. Known for its golden-brown bell with a reddish tint and long, flowing maroon tentacles, this jellyfish can grow impressively large—its bell reaching up to 3 feet (1 meter) in diameter and tentacles trailing as far as 15 feet (4.6 meters)!

Despite their elegant appearance, these jellyfish pack a mild sting, similar to the irritation caused by stinging nettle plants. They use their tentacles like nets to catch small fish, crustaceans, and zooplankton, paralyzing their prey with venomous stingers before dining.

Interestingly, Pacific sea nettles are a favorite at aquariums due to their vibrant colors and graceful movements. They’re also relatively easy to care for in captivity, making them a fascinating yet low-maintenance attraction for ocean enthusiasts!
