Latimeria, a genus of rare and ancient coelacanths, is often called a "living fossil" because it has remained mostly unchanged for over 400 million years! These deep-sea lobe-finned fish are more closely related to tetrapods (like mammals and amphibians) than to other fish.
There are two known species: the West Indian Ocean coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae), which is deep blue, and the Indonesian coelacanth (Latimeria menadoensis), which is brown.
