Animal Facts:
Latimeria, a genus of rare and ancient coelacanths, is often called a "living fossil" because it has remained mostly unchanged for over 400 million years! These deep-sea lobe-finned fish are more closely related to tetrapods (like mammals and amphibians) than to other fish.
There are two known species: the West Indian Ocean coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae), which is deep blue, and the Indonesian coelacanth (Latimeria menadoensis), which is brown. Both live in the Indian Ocean and can dive as deep as 700 meters (2,300 feet). With a lifespan of up to 100 years and a unique ability to slow down their metabolism, these fascinating creatures thrive in cold, oxygen-rich waters.
Despite their prehistoric charm, coelacanths are critically endangered, making them one of the world’s rarest and most intriguing marine species!
