Onychodictyon: The Armored Worm from the Cambrian

Onychodictyon is a fascinating extinct creature from the early Cambrian period, approximately 500 million years ago. Its fossils have been discovered in the famous Chengjiang Maotianshan Shales of Yunnan, China, making it a star of the Cambrian seas.

This small but striking creature, measuring up to 70 mm (2.8 inches) in length, was covered in fleshy papillae and pairs of spiny, sclerotized plates, giving it the appearance of an "armored worm." Its legs ended in curved claws, likely aiding it in climbing onto other organisms. The species O. ferox boasted a pair of simple eyes and feathery antenna-like appendages on its head, while O. gracilis had a blunt front end with no such appendages.

Interestingly, Onychodictyon may have been a deposit feeder, scavenging organic material from the seafloor. It also molted its sclerites, with some fossils showing perfectly aligned plates from successive molts. Scientists believe it is closely related to modern tardigrades (water bears) and early arthropods, highlighting its importance in understanding the evolution of Panarthropoda.
