Animal Facts:
The shoebill, also known as the whale-headed stork, is a large wading bird native to tropical East Africa, inhabiting swamps from South Sudan to Zambia. It is named for its distinctive, massive shoe-shaped bill, which it uses to hunt its primary prey, such as lungfish and other wetland vertebrates. Standing at 110–140 cm (43–55 in) tall, with a wingspan of up to 260 cm (8 ft 6 in), the shoebill is known for its slow, statue-like movements and solitary behavior. Interestingly, this bird produces a sound similar to machine-gun fire by clattering its bill, a behavior often used during nesting or communication. Classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN, it faces threats from habitat destruction, hunting, and human disturbance.
