The sawfish, belonging to the Pristidae family, is one of the ocean's most fascinating creatures, known for its long, saw-like snout, or "rostrum," lined with sharp, tooth-like structures. This "saw" isn’t for show—it’s a highly flexible tool used for hunting prey, such as fish and crustaceans, by stunning them or stirring up the seafloor.
Sawfish are incredibly large rays, with some species growing over 7 meters (23 feet) long, making them among the largest fish in the ocean! Despite their size and fearsome appearance, sawfish are harmless to humans unless provoked. They are also slow breeders, which makes them vulnerable to population decline.
Unfortunately, all species of sawfish are now critically endangered, facing threats like habitat loss, overfishing, and entanglement in fishing nets (their "saws" make escape difficult). Conservation efforts, such as strict protections in Australia and the U.S., aim to save these unique creatures.
Sawfish remind us of the ocean’s diversity and the urgent need to protect marine life, making their story one of both wonder and warning.
