Animal Facts:
The Fiordland penguin, also known as tawaki in Māori, is a rare crested penguin species endemic to New Zealand. Recognizable by its striking yellow crest running from its beak and over its eyes, this medium-sized penguin prefers nesting in secluded coastal forests and caves along the southwestern coasts of New Zealand's South Island and Stewart Island.
Fascinatingly, Fiordland penguins are known for their unique "two-egg strategy," where the first, smaller egg rarely survives, favoring the larger, second egg. These penguins are also expert divers, plunging deep into the ocean to hunt squid, krill, and fish. Often shy and nocturnal, they come ashore to breed from July to December, showcasing incredible loyalty to their nesting sites and mates. Despite their charm, they face threats from predators like stoats and dogs, making them a near-threatened species.
