Animal Facts:

Dickinsonia, a fascinating member of the Ediacaran biota, is one of Earth's earliest known complex organisms, dating back over 550 million years. Found in fossil-rich sites like South Australia and Russia, this flat, ribbed creature could grow up to 1 meter long. Its body was segmented and bilaterally symmetrical (or possibly glide-reflected), resembling a primitive pancake with ribs.

Scientists have long debated its classification—suggesting it could be a jellyfish, lichen, or even a giant protist. However, recent studies, including fossilized traces and the discovery of cholesterol (a hallmark of animals), point to it being one of the earliest animal relatives, potentially a stem-bilaterian. Dickinsonia absorbed nutrients through its underside, likely feeding on microbial mats covering the ancient seabed.

While its exact placement in the tree of life remains mysterious, its unique anatomy and the clues it left behind make Dickinsonia a captivating window into life over half a billion years ago!
