Animal Facts:

Dickinsonia is an extinct genus of organisms that lived during the Ediacaran period (567–550 million years ago) in what is now Australia, China, Russia, and Ukraine. These creatures had soft, segmented, oval-shaped bodies that ranged in size from a few millimeters to over a meter. They likely lived on the seafloor, feeding on microbial mats.

Though their classification is debated, Dickinsonia is widely considered an early animal, possibly related to bilaterians. Fossils of Dickinsonia are preserved as imprints in sandstone, showcasing their unique rib-like segments. In 2018, the discovery of cholesterol in their fossils further supported their classification as animals. Fascinating and enigmatic, Dickinsonia offers a glimpse into the origins of complex life on Earth!
