Animal Facts:
The Brown-headed Gull (Chroicocephalus brunnicephalus) is a charismatic small gull native to the high plateaus of Central Asia during its breeding season. Found across regions like Tajikistan and Inner Mongolia, this migratory bird loves its winters on the coasts and large inland lakes of the Indian subcontinent.
Unlike its relative, the black-headed gull, the brown-headed gull sports a lighter brown hood in summer and striking red legs and bill, making it a true standout. Its wings are adorned with black tips and white "mirrors," giving it a sleek and graceful appearance in flight.
What makes this gull fascinating is its adaptability. It's equally at home scavenging in towns and picking invertebrates from freshly ploughed fields. Social by nature, it forms noisy colonies in reedbeds or marshes, where it nests on the ground. Not a fan of open seas, the brown-headed gull prefers coasts and is rarely spotted far offshore.
Whether soaring over Pangong Tso Lake or fishing in Navi Mumbai, this opportunistic feeder is a true symbol of resilience and charm in the bird world!
