Animal Facts:

Arandaspis (Arandaspis prionotolepis) is an extinct species of jawless fish that lived during the Ordovician period, approximately 480–470 million years ago. It is one of the earliest known vertebrates, discovered in the Stairway Sandstone near Alice Springs, Australia. Named after the Indigenous Arrernte people, Arandaspis had a body around 12–14 cm (5–6 in) long, covered in rows of armored scutes, with hard plates protecting its head and body. Likely a filter-feeder, this ancient fish lacked paired fins and had a simple tail structure. Arandaspis provides valuable insight into the evolution of early vertebrates.
