The African fat-tailed gecko (Hemitheconyx caudicinctus) is a charming, ground-dwelling reptile native to West Africa, from Senegal to Nigeria, and parts of Cameroon. These nocturnal geckos are known for their unique defense mechanism: they can drop their tails to escape predators, and although the tail regrows, it takes on a rounded, bulbous shape. Their tails also act as fat storage, allowing them to survive food shortages. Typically measuring 7–8 inches long, with soft brown and beige stripes and a pale underbelly, they are terrestrial creatures with movable eyelids and no adhesive toe pads.
