De binnenlandse zijdemot (Bombyx mori) is een opmerkelijk insect dat al meer dan 5000 jaar gedomesticeerd wordt om luxueuze zijde te produceren. Eén cocon kan tot wel 900 meter zijdedraad opleveren, maar er zijn ongeveer 6000 cocons nodig om één kilo zijde te maken! Deze motten zijn volledig afhankelijk van mensen: ze kunnen niet vliegen en gedijen op witte moerbeibladeren, waar ze hun geur ruiken als ware fijnproevers. Interessant is dat hun poppen eetbaar zijn en zelfs worden voorgesteld als duurzaam ruimtevoedsel voor astronauten.
