Animal Facts:
The Honeycomb Moray (Gymnothorax favagineus), also known as the Tessellate Moray or Laced Moray, is one of the most strikingly patterned marine eels in the world. Its white to yellowish body, adorned with intricate black spots resembling a honeycomb or leopard print, makes it a true masterpiece of marine design.
This impressive eel can grow up to 3 meters (10 feet) long, although most are much smaller. Honeycomb Morays are predominantly nocturnal hunters, venturing out at night to feast on small fish and cephalopods. During the day, they are more reserved, often nestled in the safety of coral reef crevices at depths of 1 to 45 meters.
Native to the Indo-West Pacific, these mesmerizing creatures are found near coral reefs from the Red Sea and eastern Africa to Papua New Guinea and Australia. Interestingly, their spot patterns vary based on environmental conditions, with clearer waters producing more defined prints—a natural fashion statement!
Despite their beauty, they are known for being aggressive, especially the larger adults, so admire these underwater wonders from a safe distance if you spot one while diving!
