The Macropinna microstoma, commonly known as the Pacific barreleye fish, is one of the ocean's most fascinating and surreal creatures. Found 600 to 800 meters deep in the Pacific Ocean's mesopelagic zone, this small fish (about 15 cm long) is famous for its transparent, dome-shaped head, which acts like a fluid-filled "helmet." Within this dome, its bright green, tubular eyes can rotate upward to spot prey like jellyfish above or forward to navigate and feed.

What’s even cooler? These eyes are shielded from the stinging tentacles of siphonophores, on which the fish likes to “steal” meals. Though it seems otherworldly, the barreleye is perfectly adapted to its dark, deep-sea environment, using its specialized eyes to filter sunlight and detect bioluminescent glows. Once believed to have fixed vision, scientists discovered in 2008 that its eyes are mobile, adding to its deep-sea mystique.
