Animal Facts:
The Daurian jackdaw, a charming member of the crow family (Corvidae), is native to eastern Asia, including regions like Siberia, Mongolia, and China. Known for its striking appearance, this bird is about 32 cm (13 inches) long and features beautiful black plumage on its head, throat, wings, and tail, paired with creamy white feathers forming a "collar" around its neck.
Unlike its close cousin, the western jackdaw, this bird has unique black irises, setting it apart. It's a sociable creature, often seen mingling with rooks and chattering in flocks. Its diet is just as varied as its personality—it eats grains, insects, berries, eggs, and even carrion. Despite their boldness, many of these jackdaws prefer nesting in quiet spaces like tree hollows, rock crevices, and abandoned buildings.
If you’re lucky enough to be in Japan or Korea during winter, you might spot them as rare visitors escaping the colder northern regions. They're truly a wonderful mix of elegance and intrigue in the bird world!
