Hammerhead Shark: The Ocean’s Distinctive Predator
Hammerhead sharks, belonging to the family Sphyrnidae, are renowned for their unique hammer-shaped heads, known as cephalofoils. This specialized head structure enhances their 360-degree vertical vision, allowing them to see above and below simultaneously, and improves their ability to detect prey through sensory pores called ampullae of Lorenzini.
Found in warm coastal waters worldwide, hammerheads range in size from the 5-foot bonnethead to the 13-foot great hammerhead. These sharks are social during the day, often forming schools, and become solitary hunters at night, feeding on fish, squid, crustaceans, and their favorite prey—stingrays.
Fun fact: Despite their fierce appearance, hammerheads rarely pose a threat to humans. Interestingly, the bonnethead shark is the only known omnivorous shark, consuming both seagrass and animal prey!
