Frilled Shark: The Living Fossil of the Deep
The frilled shark (Chlamydoselachus anguineus), often called a "living fossil," is a deep-sea predator with origins dating back over 95 million years. With its eel-like body, six pairs of frilled gills, and 300 needle-like teeth arranged in trident shapes, this shark is perfectly adapted to its mysterious deep-sea habitat. Measuring up to 2 meters (6.6 feet) in length, it hunts squid, smaller sharks, and bony fish, lunging like an eel to capture prey whole.
Found in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, this rare species can live at depths of up to 1,570 meters (5,150 feet). Fascinatingly, its gestation period is one of the longest in the animal kingdom, lasting up to 3.5 years! Its wide, gaping jaws and prehistoric appearance make it one of the most intriguing sharks ever discovered.
