Parasaurolophus: The Trumpet-Crested Dinosaur
Parasaurolophus, meaning “near-crested lizard,” was a fascinating hadrosaurid dinosaur that roamed western North America during the Late Cretaceous period (about 76.9–73.5 million years ago). This herbivore could grow over 9 meters (30 feet) long and weigh more than 5 metric tons!
Its most striking feature was the long, hollow crest on its head, which acted like a resonating chamber. Scientists believe it was used to produce unique sounds for communication, identify species or sexes, and possibly even regulate body temperature.
Parasaurolophus could walk on both two and four legs, munching on plants from ground level up to 4 meters (13 feet) high. With its trumpet-like crest, it remains one of the most iconic and mysterious dinosaurs of its time! 🦖🎺
