Animal Facts:
Redlichiida is an extinct order of trilobites, a group of marine arthropods, that lived during the Cambrian period (521–500 million years ago). Among the earliest trilobites in the fossil record, Redlichiida is considered ancestral to other trilobite orders. Their elongated, oval-shaped bodies had genal spines on the cephalon (head shield), segmented thoraxes often with spines, and small pygidia (tail shields). Fossils of Redlichiida have been found in regions like China, Australia, Morocco, Canada, and the United States, with notable deposits in the Emu Bay Shale and Maotianshan Shales. They form two suborders: Olenellina, lacking facial sutures, and Redlichiina, which possess them.
