Pentaceratops: The Five-Horned Face of the Late Cretaceous
Pentaceratops, meaning "five-horned face," was a large herbivorous dinosaur that lived about 76–73 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period in what is now North America. Despite its name, it had three prominent horns (one on the nose and two above the eyes) and two smaller spikes below its eyes, giving it its "five-horned" title.
This ceratopsid dinosaur measured up to 6 meters (20 feet) long and weighed around 2.5 metric tons. Its most striking feature was a massive, rectangular frill on the back of its skull, adorned with triangular hornlets and large openings called fenestrae.
Pentaceratops used its sharp beak to munch on tough plants like ferns and conifers, and its frill may have been used for display, thermoregulation, or defense. Sharing its habitat with dinosaurs like Parasaurolophus and Bistahieversor, Pentaceratops was a true icon of the prehistoric landscape!
