Animal Facts:
The Himalayasaurus is an extinct genus of ichthyosaur that lived during the Late Triassic period, approximately 215–212 million years ago. Discovered in the Qulonggongba Formation of Tibet, it is known for its massive size, with an estimated length of over 15 meters (49 ft). The type species, Himalayasaurus tibetensis, was first described in 1972 based on fragmentary remains, including teeth, vertebrae, and limb bones. While its classification has been debated, its distinct cutting edges on teeth suggest unique adaptations. Himalayasaurus belonged to the family Shastasauridae, which includes other large Triassic ichthyosaurs like Shonisaurus.
