Animal Facts:

Astraspis ("star shield") is an extinct genus of primitive jawless fish that lived during the Ordovician period (467–443 million years ago). Fossils have been discovered in North America (Colorado and Wyoming) and Bolivia. Measuring about 20 cm (7.9 in) in length, Astraspis had a mobile tail and a body covered with protective plate-like scales. Its head shield was composed of bony plates made of aspidin (a material similar to modern shark teeth) and star-shaped dentine tubercles, which inspired its name. With large lateral eyes and eight gill openings on each side, Astraspis provides key insights into early vertebrate evolution.
