Arsinoitherium: The Rhinoceros-like Beast of Prehistory

Arsinoitherium, an extinct genus of large mammals, roamed the tropical rainforests and swampy coasts of North Africa during the Late Eocene to Early Oligocene periods (36–27 million years ago). Despite its rhino-like appearance, it is more closely related to elephants, manatees, and hyraxes.

These massive herbivores measured up to 3 meters (9.8 feet) in length, stood 1.75 meters (5.7 feet) tall at the shoulders, and weighed around 2.5 tons. Their most striking feature was a pair of large, keratin-covered horns above their nose, with smaller knobs above their eyes.

Fossils have been unearthed in Egypt’s Faiyum Oasis and other parts of Africa and Arabia, offering insights into their swampy, forested habitats. Arsinoitherium played a key role in understanding prehistoric mammalian evolution, showcasing a distant branch of the evolutionary tree that diverged from modern-day elephants.
