Animal Facts:
The orangutan (Pongo) is a highly intelligent great ape native to the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra in Southeast Asia. Known for their reddish-brown fur, long arms, and arboreal lifestyle, orangutans are the world's most tree-dwelling great apes, spending much of their time high in the forest canopy.
Orangutans exhibit significant sexual dimorphism—males develop large cheek pads (flanges) and use long calls to attract mates and establish dominance. They are also known for their ability to use tools, build complex sleeping nests, and display cultural variations across populations.
Sadly, all three species of orangutans (Bornean, Sumatran, and Tapanuli) are critically endangered, threatened by habitat loss, deforestation (mainly for palm oil plantations), and illegal poaching. Conservation efforts are vital to protect these remarkable creatures and their forest homes.
