Sea Lamprey: Nature's Vampiric Survivor

The sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus), often called the "vampire fish," is a parasitic jawless fish native to the Northern Hemisphere. With an eel-like body and a round, sucker-like mouth lined with sharp, concentric teeth, it uses its rasping tongue to latch onto other fish and feed on their blood.

Sea lampreys are anadromous, migrating from oceans or lakes to rivers to spawn, after which they die. They can grow up to 120 cm (47 inches) long and weigh over 2.3 kg (5.1 lbs).

While considered a delicacy in parts of Europe, they are infamous as invasive pests in the Great Lakes, where they have devastated native fish populations. Interestingly, their saliva contains an anticoagulant called lamphredin, preventing their host's blood from clotting—perfect for their vampiric feeding style!
