The African penguin (Spheniscus demersus), also known as the Cape penguin or jackass penguin, is a flightless bird native to the southern coast of Africa. It’s the only penguin species found in Africa and is easily recognizable by its tuxedo-like appearance, distinctive horseshoe-shaped chest markings, and unique pink patches above its eyes. These pink patches are actually sweat glands that help them regulate body temperature in the heat!
Standing about 60-70 cm (24-28 inches) tall and weighing between 2.2–3.5 kg (4.9–7.7 lbs), African penguins are excellent swimmers, reaching speeds of up to 20 km/h (12 mph) as they dive for fish, squid, and crustaceans. They can hold their breath for up to two minutes and dive to depths of 130 meters (430 feet) in their pursuit of food.
Nicknamed "jackass penguins" because of their braying, donkey-like call, these birds are social animals that breed in noisy colonies along the rocky coasts and islands of South Africa and Namibia. Sadly, they are now critically endangered, with populations drastically declining due to overfishing, habitat loss, oil spills, and climate change.
Fun fact: African penguins have a life hack for drinking seawater! Their supraorbital glands filter out salt, allowing them to hydrate while living in a marine environment. Plus, their unique chest spot patterns are like fingerprints – no two penguins have the same design, making each one truly special!
Despite their challenges, African penguins are beloved by tourists at spots like Boulders Beach in South Africa, where they coexist with humans.
