Piranha: The Amazon's Toothy Predator
Piranhas are freshwater fish native to South America's rivers and lakes, belonging to the family Serrasalmidae. Known for their razor-sharp teeth and powerful bite, these fish have a fearsome reputation but are actually omnivorous, feeding on fish, plants, fruits, and even insects.
Interestingly, piranhas typically school together not to hunt, but for protection from predators like caimans and dolphins. The red-bellied piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri), the most iconic species, can grow up to 50 cm (20 inches) long and is famous for its collective feeding frenzies.
Despite their fierce image, piranhas are shy fish, and most attacks on humans result in minor injuries. But their teeth are so sharp that some South American tribes use them as tools for carving wood and cutting hair!
