The red panda (Ailurus fulgens), also called the "lesser panda," is an adorable small mammal native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China. Despite its name, the red panda is not closely related to the giant panda! Instead, its closest relatives are raccoons, weasels, and skunks, all part of the Musteloidea superfamily. Interestingly, both the red panda and the giant panda evolved a "false thumb"—an extended wrist bone—to help them grasp bamboo, their primary food source.

Fun fact: The red panda was the first creature to be called a "panda," with the giant panda later adopting the name. The term "panda" likely comes from the Nepali word ponya, meaning "bamboo-footed." These shy and solitary animals are also known for their unique vocalizations, including bleats, grunts, and squeals.
