Animal Facts:
The White-breasted Waterhen (Amaurornis phoenicurus) is a fascinating waterbird native to South and Southeast Asia. Known for its striking black and white plumage, it has a white face, chest, and belly, contrasted with dark grey upperparts and cinnamon undertail. Its bright yellow bill and legs add a pop of color, making it truly eye-catching.
These birds are not shy like many other rails and can often be seen strutting boldly in marshes or even near busy roads with their tails cocked upright. They are crepuscular, meaning they are most active during dawn and dusk, when they fill the air with their loud and repetitive croaky calls. Interestingly, their local names in different languages often mimic their unique vocalizations—for example, "ruak-ruak" in Malay and "korawakka" in Sinhala.
White-breasted Waterhens are skilled foragers, feeding on insects, small fish (which they sometimes wash before eating!), and seeds. They also have quirky behaviors like walking with jerky tail movements or clambering up low vegetation in search of food.
During the breeding season, which usually begins after the first rains, they lay 6-7 eggs in a dry ground nest hidden in marshy vegetation. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs and caring for the chicks, which are adorably downy and black at birth.
Fun fact: These birds are adventurous colonizers! They’ve even been spotted settling on volcanic islands like Rakata, showcasing their adaptability and wanderlust. So, next time you’re near a wetland, keep an eye out for this bold and beautiful bird!
