Animal Facts:
The Dynastes neptunus, commonly known as the Neptune beetle, is a striking member of the Scarabaeidae family. Found in the lush rainforests of Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, and Venezuela, this impressive insect can grow up to 15.5 cm (6.1 inches), making it one of the largest beetles in the world! The males boast distinctive, curved horns, used mainly for battling rivals, while the females are comparatively smoother.
Interestingly, the Neptune beetle is often mistaken for its close relative, the famous Hercules beetle, but its horns are slimmer and more curved. This beetle’s larvae feast on decaying wood, contributing to forest ecosystems as natural recyclers, while adults prefer softer meals like fruits. With their glossy black bodies and unique features, these gentle giants are a marvel of nature, playing an essential role in maintaining the balance of rainforest habitats.
