Description
Animal Facts:
The Little Grebe, also known as the Dabchick (Tachybaptus ruficollis), is a small but fascinating water bird! Measuring just 23–29 cm in length, it's the smallest member of the grebe family in Europe. Its scientific name stems from Greek and Latin roots, meaning "fast sinker with a red neck" – a nod to its diving skills and striking breeding plumage.
These birds are expert swimmers and divers, using underwater vegetation to hunt fish and aquatic invertebrates. During the breeding season, their rufous neck, cheeks, and flanks make them unmistakable, while their "whinnying" calls add a charming touch.
Found across Europe, Asia, Africa, and even New Guinea, they prefer freshwater habitats but venture to open or coastal waters in winter. Interestingly, they’re poor walkers because their legs are set far back, so they build floating nests at the water's edge and even cover their eggs with weeds for camouflage. Adorable chicks often hitch rides on their parents' backs soon after hatching.
