Animal Facts:

The Black-faced Spoonbill (Platalea minor) is a unique and captivating species of wading bird found in eastern Asia. This elegant bird is a member of the ibis and spoonbill family, Threskiornithidae, and is recognized by its distinctive spatula-shaped black bill, fluffy white plumage, and a splash of golden-yellow breeding feathers on its head and breast. Its name perfectly captures one of its most striking features — a face masked in sleek black.

Known as the rarest of the six spoonbill species, the Black-faced Spoonbill's range is remarkably restricted. It primarily breeds on small rocky islands off the coasts of North and South Korea and migrates to winter in countries like Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, and more. During winter months, this bird depends on intertidal mudflats for feeding, delicately sweeping its bill side-to-side in shallow waters to capture small fish and crustaceans.

Remarkably, after being nearly driven to extinction in the 1980s, conservation efforts have helped its population climb from a dramatic low of about 290 individuals to over 6,000 as of 2022! This bird is now classified as "Vulnerable" but remains an important icon of conservation success and a reminder of the importance of protecting fragile ecosystems.

Fun fact: The Black-faced Spoonbill is a crepuscular feeder, meaning it's most active at dawn and dusk—perfectly timed to make the most of peaceful waters and a plentiful supply of food.
