The leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) is a fascinating marine reptile and the largest turtle species globally, growing up to 2.7 meters (8.9 feet) long and weighing over 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds). Unlike other turtles, its shell is not hard but covered in thick, flexible, leather-like skin, which helps it withstand the extreme pressures of deep dives—reaching depths of over 1,200 meters (4,000 feet).
Leatherbacks are also the fastest-swimming reptiles, clocking speeds of up to 35 km/h (21.7 mph). Their primary diet consists of jellyfish, and they play a critical role in keeping jellyfish populations in check. Interestingly, their esophagus is lined with backward-facing spines to help trap slippery prey.
These turtles are world travelers, migrating thousands of kilometers across oceans to feed and nest. A remarkable example is one leatherback tracked swimming 20,000 km (12,000 miles) from Indonesia to the U.S.! Sadly, they face threats like plastic pollution, often mistaking plastic bags for jellyfish. Conservation efforts are vital to protect this ancient species, which has existed for over 100 million years since the time of the dinosaurs.
