Animal Facts:
The Rufous-necked Hornbill (Aceros nipalensis) is a striking and rare bird species found in the forests of Bhutan, northeastern India, and parts of Southeast Asia. With its vibrant rufous-colored neck and head (in males), glossy black plumage, and unique ridged beak, it’s among the largest hornbills, measuring up to 117 cm (46 inches) in length.
This bird thrives in lush, hilly forests at elevations of 150–2,200 meters, where it feeds on fruits and occasionally small animals. Known as "farmers of the forest," hornbills play a crucial ecological role by dispersing seeds across vast areas. However, the Rufous-necked Hornbill is classified as Vulnerable due to habitat loss and hunting, with fewer than 10,000 individuals left in the wild.
One quirky fact? Unlike many hornbills, this species lacks a prominent casque (the horn-like structure on the beak), earning its genus name Aceros, meaning "hornless" in Greek. Conservation efforts, including artificial beak programs, are helping protect this magnificent bird and its habitat.
