The Black-spotted Pond Frog (Pelophylax nigromaculatus), known in Japan as トノサマガエル (Tonosama Gaeru), is a remarkable species of true frog native to East Asia. Found across Japan (excluding certain areas), China, Korea, and parts of Russia, this medium-sized amphibian prefers lowland habitats such as rice fields, ponds, and slow-moving waters. Its diet is carnivorous, feeding on insects, spiders, and even smaller frogs or snakes when available, showcasing its opportunistic nature.

The frog is famous for its bright green or brownish-olive back adorned with black spots, a dorsal light stripe, and its powerful jumping legs. Males, slightly smaller than females, are equipped with vocal sacs to serenade during breeding seasons, which happen typically between April and June. The species’ ability to lay numerous eggs (approximately 1,800–3,000 per clutch) is crucial for maintaining its population amidst environmental challenges.

Interestingly, the Black-spotted Pond Frog is highly territorial, especially during mating seasons, and can display aggressive behavior towards other males. In Japan, it is celebrated in folklore and occasionally confused with closely related species.
