Gibbons: The Acrobats of the Rainforest!
Gibbons, often called the “lesser apes,” are the incredible athletes of the primate world. Native to the lush forests of Southeast Asia, these small, tailless apes are famous for their spectacular method of travel: brachiation. With their extra-long arms and special ball-and-socket wrist joints, gibbons swing gracefully from branch to branch, soaring up to 15 meters (nearly 50 feet) at speeds as fast as a car! In fact, they’re the fastest tree-dwelling, non-flying mammals on Earth.
Gibbons come in many varieties, with fur colors ranging from black to golden, and some species sport dramatic white markings on their faces, hands, or feet. While they look a bit like monkeys, gibbons are more closely related to great apes and humans—just a lot smaller and more acrobatic.
Living mostly in monogamous pairs, gibbons are deeply social and defend their treetop territories with loud, melodic songs that can be heard over a kilometer away. Each species (and even each pair!) has a unique calling style—a rainforest opera!
Sadly, many gibbon species are endangered because of habitat loss and hunting. Conservation projects across Asia are working to make sure these charismatic “skywalkers” continue their wild symphony in the trees for generations to come.
